A Child's Guide Through Grief
When a third grader's big sister Jennifer dies, the boy is confused, angry, and scared. For the first time, he must face the awful finality of death and the pain of loss. The young boy is fearful "because some day my mother could die, or my father could die, or I could die." He feels sorry and somehow responsible for Jennifer's death because on their last Thanksgiving his sister "gobbled up all my turkey stuffing, so I punched her really hard and she cried really loud."
Finally, the boy is able to open his heart to Betsy, his babysitter, who lost a brother in a car accident. Betsy shares her own experiences, her fears, empty feelings, anger and pain and that of her parents. She assures the boy that soon he "won't have all these terrible feelings all day long" and suggests ways to help with the pain.
